Butler University’s Strategy to Grow Teacher Education Enrollment

Butler University’s Enrollment Success with Loan Repayment Assistance Programs

For colleges and universities nationwide, recruiting teacher education students can be challenging. Even at colleges with good job placement rates, financial concerns often deter students from pursuing their passion for education.

Butler University faced this exact challenge, until they began using Ardeo’s Loan Repayment Assistance Programs (LRAPs). This student-centric approach reduced financial concerns and helped students enroll at Butler.

What Is LRAP, and How Does It Work?

LRAP is a financial safety net. If post-graduation income is modest, LRAP helps repay federal, private, and parent PLUS loans (plus converted TEACH Grants).

By eliminating concerns about student loan debt and the lower salaries that often accompany a teaching career, Butler enabled students to flip their enrollment decisions from “no” to “yes.”

A Breakdown of Butler’s Enrollment Gains

Since introducing LRAP to their College of Education and other students, Butler University has seen steady gains:

  • Butler enrolled 99 students with LRAP for the 2023-24 cohort, including 34 from the College of Education.
  • The momentum continued in 2024-25, with 114 students enrolled with LRAP, including 37 from the College of Education.

Why LRAP Works for Teacher Education Programs

Butler University’s success demonstrates that Loan Repayment Assistance Programs resonate with students, especially those entering fields with modest starting salaries, like education or social work. Here’s why LRAP is so effective:

  • Reduces Financial Anxiety: Students are more willing to enroll when loan repayment assistance is part of the package.
  • Enhances Recruitment Messaging: Offering a program like LRAP sets institutions apart in a competitive market.
  • Aligns with Institutional Goals: LRAP supports mission-driven students who want to make a difference.

“As an aspiring teacher, I am aware of the salary I will have, which has prevented me from being able to attend Butler University. Now, with LRAP, I can enroll. Thanks so, so much!
