How is Jackson State University overcoming student loan concerns and helping more students enroll at their university?
Through Ardeo’s Loan Repayment Assistance Programs (LRAPs)!
Watch the conversation with JSU’s chief enrollment officer, Kylon Alford-Windfield, to explore how Jackson State uses Ardeo’s LRAPs to proactively address affordability and loan concerns. Jackson State University is the first HBCU to offer Loan Repayment Assistance Programs to new, incoming students.
During the webinar, Alford-Windfield talked about why they chose to partner with Ardeo and offer LRAPs. They received media attention for their launch of LRAPs to combat Mississippi’s state teacher’s shortage.
Alford-Windfield said a program like LRAP is, “transformational for a school like Jackson State, and it’s transformational for those families that we serve.”
“What [the media attention] did was two things, well, multiple things. It drew inquiries from prospective students, but also it drew inquiries from parents as well. I got a number of calls from different administrators across the country and we saw immediate increase in our application pool.”

For Fall 2024, Jackson State offered LRAPs to all of their incoming education majors. They also offered LRAPs to admitted students late in the recruitment cycle who had not yet registered. JSU enrolled 449 students with the program. 42% of surveyed students agreed or strongly agreed they would not have enrolled without the program.
Because of their success, JSU decided to market their LRAP earlier in the cycle for Fall 2025. They are marketing the program to all new, first-year students.
“And I can say for this upcoming fall, next academic year, we’re experiencing about a 20% increase in our applications and about a 15% increase in our admitted students.”
