Getting to Know Phil
Q: What do you enjoy most about your role as Vice President of Student Service?
What I enjoy most about my role is the people I get to work with every day, both internally and externally. At Ardeo, we’re united by a common mission: helping students access higher education and giving families greater confidence in their educational investment. It’s rewarding to collaborate with such a dedicated team that is equally passionate about supporting our clients and helping students and families achieve their educational goals. When everyone is working toward the same purpose, the impact we can make is truly meaningful.
Q: Looking back on your career, was there a particular experience or interaction with a student or colleague that reinforced why you chose to work in higher education?
One experience that has stayed with me occurred while I was helping with financial aid advising on a college campus. A student asked me whether he would be guaranteed a job after graduation. As we talked, it became clear that he was concerned about what the future might hold. What struck me during that conversation was that he viewed a college degree as something that should automatically lead to employment. It made me realize that not all students fully understand what it takes to create value in the workforce or how higher education helps them develop the skills, knowledge, and habits employers are looking for. We talked about how success after graduation isn’t guaranteed by a diploma alone, but by the effort you put into learning, growing, and building capabilities that allow you to contribute and make a difference. Moments like that reinforce why I’ve dedicated my career to higher education. Sometimes a simple conversation can help a student see their potential, take ownership of their future, and better understand the role education can play in helping them achieve their goals.
Industry Insights & Trends
Q: What do you think is one of the biggest misconceptions students and families have about borrowing to pay for college?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that borrowing automatically means taking on unmanageable debt. The reality is that student loans are a tool, and like any financial tool, their impact depends on how they’re used. When borrowing decisions are made with good information and realistic planning, loans can help make educational opportunities accessible while remaining manageable after graduation. The key is understanding the costs, benefits, and repayment options before making a decision.
Q: We ask everyone this question: Regarding issues in higher ed right now, what keeps you up at night?
What keeps me up at night is the ongoing debate about whether college is worth the investment, especially when it causes students to question opportunities that could help them build valuable skills and create a better future. I believe students who want to learn and grow should always have access to higher education at an affordable price, and it’s our responsibility as an industry to help make that possible through greater transparency, affordability, and support.
Experience & Perspective
Q: You’ve dedicated your career to helping students access higher education. What’s one lesson you’ve learned along the way that’s stuck with you?
I’ve learned that every student’s story is different. It’s easy to focus on numbers, processes, or policies, but behind every application and financial decision is a person working toward a goal. Taking the time to listen, understand individual circumstances, and provide personalized guidance can have a lasting impact on a student’s confidence and ability to move forward.
Q: When it comes to supporting students and families through financial decisions, what do you believe makes the biggest difference in creating a positive experience?
Communication makes the biggest difference. Families don’t expect every aspect of college financing to be simple, but they do appreciate transparency, responsiveness, and guidance they can trust. When students and families understand their options, know where to turn with questions, and feel supported throughout the process, they are far more confident in their decisions and overall experience.
Ardeo Impact & Student Experience
Q: For someone unfamiliar with LRAPs, how would you explain the value of having a student loan safety net—and the peace of mind it can provide?
Pursuing a college education is an investment in your future, but like any investment, there can be uncertainty along the way. An LRAP provides peace of mind by helping students and families know they have a safety net if post-graduation income doesn’t meet expectations. Rather than worrying about “what if” scenarios, students can focus on learning, developing skills, and preparing for their careers with greater confidence.
Q: How does Ardeo help students and families understand their LRAP benefits, and why is that education such an important part of the experience?
Ardeo helps students and families understand not only what their LRAP benefit provides, but also how and when it may be used. Education and communication are essential because even the best benefit only delivers value when people understand it. By providing guidance, resources, and ongoing support, Ardeo helps families make more informed decisions about financing education and ensures they feel confident navigating their repayment options after graduation.
Personal & Fun
Q: What’s something your colleagues might be surprised to learn about you?
I wasn’t always balding! There was a period of time when I had shoulder-length hair.
Q: What’s one thing you’re always recommending—a book, podcast, restaurant, travel destination or anything else?
I’m always recommending that families make time to get away together. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. I think it’s important to always have something on the calendar that you’re looking forward to as a family. Life moves quickly, and those shared experiences and memories are often what matter most.
